  In the eighteenth century, with better farm practices and distribution of wealth, more people wanted to buy fashionable clothes. Shopkeepers began to take more time over the display and presentation of the things they sold and in their approach to customers. Buy the 1780s, glass windows led to displays that would draw attention and displays inside the store were beginning to be more attractive. Fashionable shopping was already shaping the geography of cities. Advertising and ways to spread the news of a new product were also developing. Printed advertisements showed how large a particular shop’s range of clothing was: fashion magazines gave detailed descriptions and illustrations of the latest trends and factory owners encouraged fashion leaders to be seen wearing their products. Shopping had developed along with a growing sense of personal identity. Fashionable dress provided the means to express one’s identity visually, and knowing where and how to shop for fashion was key to achieving this goal.
