A. One of the classic Christmas stories was written by the 19th-century British author Charles Dickens.  His A Christmas Carol, first published in 1843, remains a family favorite around the world.

E. Evidence of its enduring popularity is that it may be the most-adapted story of all time.  From an episode of the animated sitcom The Flintstones, set in the Stone Age, to one of The Jetsons, set in the next century, new adaptations are added seemingly every year.

B. So what is the story?  Maybe surprisingly, it is a ghost story.  A moneylender named Ebenezer Scrooge who has lost touch with his humanity is visited by ghosts who take him to Christmases in the past, and future to give him a second chance to celebrate Christmas.

F. A Christmas Carol was not Dickens' first Christmas story.  Before this, he wrote The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton.  Readers interested in Scrooge may like to find out what happened to a gravedigger named Gabriel Grub first.

D. Nor was A Christmas Carol Dickens' last Christmas story.  Later came The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain.  And Dickens eventually wrote together with other writers to continue the Christmas tradition.

C. A final point is that not all of Dickens' Christmas stories were ghost stories, or even fictional.  For example, "Christmas Festivities," Dickens' very first Christmas writing, was an essay.  For those interested, all of these and more can be found in collections in libraries or bookstores.)
