Ⅳ
We are unaware how enormous the influence of our own culture on ourselves is, and it is not until we start working or living with people from different cultural backgrounds from our own that we notice this cultural impact on ourselves.
It is so difficult for us to imagine ourselves as having been born and brought up in a different culture that we are often unknowingly a product of our cultural backgrounds.
This blindness to our own cultural conditioning sometimes leads to prejudice towards those considered “different,” but a more everyday example is the common tendency to jump to conclusions based only on our own culture. American students often say Japanese students are “shy,” while Japanese students find American students “selfish.” “Shyness” and “selfishness,” however, are words associated with personality traits. By unnoticed cultural standards, both Americans and Japanese students interpret the behavior of their counterparts as not following an unconscious cultural norm. (153 words)
